CHAPTER TEN

The Knight

“Hi Mr Doyle, you probably won’t remember me but my name is Kate Williams and I am staying in your hotel.” Only now that she began talking to him did Kate become aware of how ludicrous the situation was in which she now found herself. She was about to ask a total stranger to come and fetch her from the penthouse of another man who was almost as much of a stranger. Worse still, she had no idea of her address.

“Good morning, Kate. I’m perfectly aware who you are. How can I be of help?”

His voice sounded remarkably calm and soothing. Now she found herself in the delicate position of trying to explain that she needed to be picked up. The situation was so embarrassing that only her fear of Russell and her memories of that one sinister room prevented from simply abandoning the call.

“Actually,” she hesitated, uncertain of how to explain her predicament. “I need a lift.”

“That’ll be no problem at all. Where would you like to go?”

“I… I’m not sure how to say this, but I need a lift from where I am now back to your hotel.”

“I see.” He spoke more slowly now. “That won’t be a problem either. Where are you?”

Kate swallowed hard. This was becoming almost unbelievably embarrassing. She had no idea where she was or how to explain her predicament.

“I’m not really sure exactly of the address. Perhaps I haven’t thought this through very well. If I go downstairs and find the street number, could you send a car to fetch me?” She was trying not to sound pathetic but under the circumstances that was virtually impossible.

“When you say go downstairs, does that mean that you are in a tall building? Perhaps if you can describe what you can see I can figure out where you are and you won’t have to go downstairs.”

In principle, the idea was sound but what the hotel manager hadn’t taken into account was that from her position Kate could see the whole city.

“That’s quite difficult,” she confessed. “I am in a penthouse and from where I am I can see the entire city. It seems like I’m on the tallest building in Houston.” Inwardly, Kate was groaning at just how insane this conversation was beginning to sound.

“I see,” said the listener in a tone that made it seem like he received calls like this every day of the week. “You’re in a penthouse at the top of the tall building you say? This wouldn’t happen to be the penthouse of Russell Arnott by any chance?”

It took less than fifteen minutes for Mark Doyle to arrive at the door of the penthouse. Kate was surprised that the hotel manager had come in person and had not just sent a driver. It made the situation much more embarrassing but Kate’s self-consciousness was easily outweighed by relief at having found the means of escape.

When she opened the door, Mark Doyle was standing in front of her looking almost nonchalant.
